As I See It:

Consider Kevin Costner’s quote, “Jim White represents the very best of the best, a quiet, graceful man who somehow let these kids know what was possible. I was proud to get to play him.” This movie is?a real life adaptation of the story of teacher/coach Jim White who molded a cross-country underdog team into champion runners. This film shows how just how one person really can make a difference.

Disney Synopsis:

In the tradition of Disney sports movies comes McFarland, USA, based on the inspirational true story of underdogs triumphing over tremendous obstacles. This heartwarming drama follows novice runners who strive to build a cross-country team under Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) in their predominantly Latino high school. Everyone has a lot to learn about each other, but when Coach realizes the boys’ exceptional running ability, things change. Beyond their talent, it’s the power of family, commitment to each other and work ethic that transform them into champions–helping them to achieve their own American dream.

Critics Opinion:

Even though it is a predictable plot somewhat fictionalized, McFarland’s latino themes and true to life details, (ex. working fields, quinceanera, and parade) are what makes this human drama inspiring. Life in 1987 Central California was difficult for or Mexican immigrants. How Blanco dealt with their poverty and cultural differences made not only them by their whole community better. ?Success comes only with hard work and ?effort.Call this man a hero for inspiring farm boys to break patterns and make better lives.
