Sentimental Journey CD Review

Sentimental Journey CD Review

When I learned Emily Rossum had completed an album called Sentimental Journey, I had to have a listen.

I remember listening to Doris Day’s original Sentimental Journey on the radio about the time I started school. The words “Gonna take a sentimental journey. Gonna set my heart at ease. Gonna make a sentimental journey to renew old memories.”, struck a chord in me back then. We were always moving about–East Rutherford, Union Beach, Jersey City, North Bergen then more to follow. My parents promised we would keep in touch with our neighbors, but we didn’t. Then when I became an adult, independent, on my own, I made some sentimental journeys.

How could I resist not taking a listen to this recording Sentimental Journey? I usually prefer originals to covers; however, this particular new release is an exception. Rossum’s renditions of old great classics– some romantic; others playfully light–is like a year’s journey. I delight in each wondering what’s next.

I am overwhelmed by the final song Pretty Papers. I replayed it again and again. It made me think and realize how lucky I am. I live in Ocean County where Hurricane Sandy breached the barrier island. Its flood surge stopped nine houses from my door. Others weren’t as lucky. They are the jersey Shore’s unfortunate, unnoticed homeless.

Emmy Rossum brings her own talent and style to each song and masterfully makes each her own. Selections include:

  • ?Sentimental Journey? (Les Brown, Ben Homer, Arthur Green)
  • ?The Object Of My Affection? (Pinky Tomlin)
  • ?I?m Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover ?(Mort Dixon, Harry M. Woods)
  • ?These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)? (Eric Maschwitz, Jack Strachey)
  • ?(I?ll Be With You) In Apple Blossom Time? (Albert Von Tilzer, Neville Fleeson)
  • ?Summer Wind? (Heinz Meier, Johnny Mercer)
  • ?Many Tears Ago? (Winfield Scott)
  • ?All I Do Is Dream Of You? (Nacio Herb Brown, Arthur Freed)
  • ?Nobody Knows You When You?re Down And Out? (Jimmy Cox)
  • ?Autumn Leaves? (Joseph Kosma, Jacques Pr?vert)
