Does your husband ever finish your sentences? Mine does. Do you ever finish your husband’s sentences? I do. It isn’t that we think alike. Rather it is that we know how one another thinks. He likes action, horror, comedy. I like animation, mysteries, musicals. So when we sat down together to watch The Horse Whisperer, I could not help but wonder if either of us would even like much less truly enjoy a western.

Thankfully, The Horse Whisperer is not heroes in white vs villains in black hats. Nor is it about cowboys vs Indians. Rather it is a romantic drama. Mother Annie Maclean (Kristin Scott Thomas) takes control after her 14 year old girl Grace (Scarlett Johansson) and her horse Pilgrim are traumatized and critically injured when a truck jackknifes on an icy upstate New York road. Grace’s anguish and her thoroughbred’s horse’s uncontrollable behavior stem from that life-changing moment in time.

Annie does not allow her embittered amputee daughter to give up; Annie also does not allow the the horse put down. Instead she drives Grace and Pilgrim west to Montana. There horse whisperer Tom Booker (Robert Redford) uses basic natural horsemanship techniques–patience, love, and a gentle touch–to retrain the horse as Grace too comes around.

Even when storytelling is slow, how this feature depicts relationships and human values excels. I refuse to be a plot spoiler and say more. However, I am dissatisfied with the movie’s ending. It lacks closure.Hubby and I both liked The Horse Whisperer. Its strengths lie in its majestic cinematography, wide open landscapes, beautiful vistas, and good acting.

  1. I’ve never seen this movie but people have said it’s a great movie. I loved your review of this more. However I am a little reluctant because according to you the ending isn’t any good.

    1. Jamie,
I did not mean that the ending was not good. Rather I meant it was Hollywood. The book ended on a dark note. I personally felt the marriage had problems before the girl’s injury so the typical ending did not suffice for me. Try it. IOt would translate into great soap opera.
