This is the seventh year of Jumpstart’s campaign to foster literacy. Last year 2.2 million people were involved. Since 2006 it has involved 7,000,000 children, raised $7,000,000, and provided 1,000,000 books for needy kids. Wow! Now let’s all help it do even more.

Everyone knows that children who read enter school prepared to succeed. So from September 27 through October 4, read to show your commitment to high quality early education. Then pledge one day October 4, 2012, to Jumpstart’s Read for the Record and the book Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad.

Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad (available in bookstores and online) is a fun story that teaches. Ladybug Girl Lulu, Dragonfly Girl Kiki, Butterfly Girl Marley, and Bumblebee Boy Sam and the dog Bingo play in the pines. Mama brings them cupcakes. Not thinking Lulu hurts her friend Kiki’s feelings. Instead of running away, Lulu does the right
thing and says, “I’m sorry.” It is a lesson everyone should understand.

I’m too far away from my grand five year old to read to her myself, but I am not going to let that stop me. Just like the Pearson Foundation and WEGIVEBOOKS.ORG, I give books. I just Read for the Record myself and am putting a copy of the book in the mail. Last week hubby got a chance to visit with her. Along with feeding birds, playing, and watching movies, they read together. Princess paid me the highest compliment when she said, “Grampy, I wish Grammy was here. She reads better.” When people like to read and read a lot, that happens.

Please help America’s children’s future.
