Granted I have seen numerous doctors, read loads of books on dieting, taken classes on the subject, even consulted dietician, but the fact is healthy diet, physical exercise, not using tobacco and being a normal body weight are the keys to controlling high blood sugar. Accordingly home alone, icy roads, freezing temperatures, hunkered down for a blizzard that wasn’t, what better time for me to focus on something positive specifically Karen Graham’s book, Diabetes Meals for Good Health?

Please be advised well in advance that I am not a Suzy Homemaker and have never been. My family and my career came in that order. Cooking for me always was (and still is) cooking from scratch, healthy BUT no fuss, no muss, certainly not time consuming or expensive.

In my kitchen cabinet are many cook books, some handed down from my mother, some outdated. I only keep ones that work for me and pass the rest on. My copy of Diabetes Meals is a gold standard–eye appealing, educational, and full of tried and true as well as something new entree recipes, many of which are similar to my own scratch ones but tweaked with smart ingredient alternatives, i. e. my own bean salad vs Graham’s is nutritional value NOT taste.

Not forbidden: Comfort foods like french toast, chili, beef stew, hamburger soup, swiss steak, meat sauce, potato salad, bread pudding.

Counting calories: favs like Cafe Americana, Italian iced cream soda, fruit milk shakes, smoothies, french onion soup, frozen yogurt bars, baked apples, light gelatin.

With diabetes not only here in America but also worldwide reaching epidemic proportions, I recommend this book. Its setup includes practical advice for good health, solid food choice instruction, food group tips, meal planning, recipes, and more all indexed for easy reference–very user friendly.
