I personally take exception to being referred to as an idiot. I found the Dummies cook book hubby gave me as a Christmas present offensive. Considering this, it is ironic that I even would read much less recommend The Complete Idiot’s Guide to The Best Family Destinations; nevertheless, I am.

I spent last evening browsing through its contents. I like the book’s organization from its table of contents through to the last pages index. All North America is broken into nine geographic regions–specifically the Northeast, the South, the Midwest, the Southwest, the Mountain States, the West, the Northwest, Mexico, Canada–in detail. Each area’s own city style, cultural appeal, at the beach, amusement park, outdoor adventures, and living history is then given in detail. Being able to say from my own personal experiences, “Been there; done that,” this book can be a solid resource for anyone planning a trip.

I came from it with ideas for my next trek. There are still places to go and things to do. As Lake Compounce, Dollywood, Holiday World, Sedona, the Steam Railways of the Rockies, Yosemite, and Leavenworth beckon, my travel plan remains what it has been my adult life, “See America first.” Having myself traveled through most of the continental U. S., I can state that Kyle McCarthy’s book is on its make and hits must sees fairly and accurately. Its only lack is that of pictures.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to The Best Family Destinations is worth its $18.95 list. It is available both online and in book stores like Barnes and Noble.

  1. Our next big trip is to China! Stateside, we’ve covered a lot, but there’s still lots to see…..the coast of Maine, the Fingers Lakes region in NY, fall colors in New England and more!

  2. The kids want to head to the other corner of the country and Disneyworld. I’d like to see Hawaii or Alaska (which none of us have been to).
