Raisels Review And Giveaway

Moments with my toddler granddaughter are never too frequent. She is on the West Coast while I am here on the East. Last visit, she told her daddy that she wanted to go with Grammy. I was overjoyed. Fact is fact and no one want to go either to the doctor’s or shopping with me. So off we went and made some memories until next time….

My checkup went well and I had lost some weight. That comes from lots of water, exercise, and proper nutritional choices. Inspired, it was off to the local membership warehouse for my Princess and me. With one tiny little girl in hand, we roamed the aisles filling the cart with essentials, staples, some of this and that but no goodies as yet.

As we passed shelves of chocolate, I heard, “Grammy, I’m hungry.” OK, she is normal and I had to harden up my heart not to overindulge her. That is when I spotted a humongous bag of golden raisins, grabbed it, and paid the bill. Back in the car, NV’s insistent “Want some” could not be postponed. She munched on the raisins on the way back to my house good as gold where she even managed to eat all her lunch.

Days later, at the end of her time here, she took what was left of the bag of raisins on her plane trip back. Good eating begins with good food habits. Even though I would love to spoil her, I would not like to spoil that. Every time I eat my raisin bran, I think of her. I know how she loved to pick out sugar-dusted raisins. I personally prefer her being addicted to fruit than candy.

So, when offered to sample Raisels, a new product from National Raisin Co., I smiled and eagerly agreed to reviewing the real fruit, dried fruit snacks. Packaging claims: #1 ingredient is real fruit; 100% US RDA for Vitamin C; rich in antioxidants; fat free; cholesterol free; no high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners; no sodium; Kosher certified by the Orthodox Union. Ingredients are golden raisins, sugar, natural flavor, citric acid, ascorbic acid, and sulfur dioxide – that’s it. A 1.25 ounce serving has 110 calories, 30 grams carbs, and 1 gram protein.

I nibbled on my first Raisel sample carefully not being exactly able to classify it. Not just a dried grape, not just a sour patch type candy. Describe it as the best of both worlds, a vitamin and nutrient enriched treat with #1 ingredient fruit flavored with a light sugar dusting and pucker power. I really wanted another, then another, then another, then another. Lucky for diet conscious me, the boxes are portion controlled.

Results of my four taste tests: juicy not dried out dry fruit, specifically golden raisins, (an oxymoron perhaps) coated with sugar; slightly sour yet sweet (contradiction apparent) taste; positive pucker power. Of the four varieties (sour apple, sour orange, sour lemon, sour peach) available, I personally like the sour apple variety. Its plump golden yellow raisins somewhat tart remind me of the taste I get biting into a fresh tart Granny Smith (apple not grandmother, silly).

The Wegman’s down the road stocks them. They are on on sale for $1.99 (package of six 1.25 ounce boxes). Other retailers who stock Raisels include Dollar General, Foodmaxx, Gelson’s, Safeway, Savemart, Stadtler Brothers, Superior Grocers, and Walgreens. Meanwhile I am sending Raisels to my grand baby next caring package. Knowing just how much she likes golden raisins nude, it is a safe bet that she will eat em up quickly and want more.

ONE winner will receive a variety of Raisels including Peach, Lemon, Apple and Orange.
