Dark Blue: The Complete First Season DVD Review

Dark Blue: The Complete First Season

Own it on DVD on July 6, 2010

Good news for fans. DARK BLUE ? THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON arrives on DVD July 6, 2010 exclusively online at WBSHOP.com and TNT.tv. Almost a year ago I got a sneak peak at it before its TNT July 15, 2009 premier. (Find its review in pat blogs.) Last year this drama’s audience averaged 2.589 million viewers per episode. The second season of Dark Blue returns August 4, 2010 for ten more episodes.

Lt. Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) has spent eighteen years on the police force. He is casual and friendly with lawbreakers. His nemesis is every high profile criminal. His double life as an undercover cop cost him his marriage and family. No wonder that he avoids most personal relationships. He relies on his team members Ty Curtis (Omari Hardwick), Dean Bendis (Logan Marshall-Green, and Jaime Allen (Nicki Aycox).

Script focus is varied rather than repeating one theme. A deep cover member caught on camera dumping a fed’s body, gun trafficking, a sting operation, a Korean gang, the rescue of a kidnap victim, a money laundering organized scam, a bad cop, drug dealing, and a gang territory war are on the weekly blotter. Target–taking the worst criminals out–overrides everything.

I know the show has received mixed reviews for some sloppy plots, non-dimensional characterization, and extreme violence. Keep in mind though this is not a prime time TV family show. It is aimed at adults. I think this show deserves to be a keeper. Why? I like Carter Shaw’s unencumbered tough but good cop image. I think the supporting cast is good and production values solid.

Here’s a clip called “Not Paying”.
