What the Drug Companies Won’t Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn’t Know: The Alternative Treatments That May Change Your Life–and the Prescriptions That Could Harm You

“What the Drug Companies Won’t Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn’t Know” is about naturopathic medicine which emphasizes prevention, treatment, and health through natural nontoxic therapy unlike allopathic medicine which treats disease and does not promote health. It is about alternative treatment.

Dr. Michael Murray bases his book on the premise that medical doctors treat illness ineffectively with pharmaceuticals. He considers this as short term symptom relief with side effects including drug induced illness, food allergies, and indigestion. Too many physicians with little knowledge of nutrition and pharmacology are pushing pills and gouging pocketbooks. He contends that most complaints are caused by diet and lifestyle.

This doctor blasts off-label prescribing, cites adverse drug reactions, and overuse of antibiotics. He questions if this creates a money market or promotes cure. Instead he promotes the internal healing mechanism and the power of mind. He criticizes medical doctors who are not warm, caring, and compassionate with their patients. His solution is internal cleansing and detoxification.

Murray contends that the role nutritional deficiencies, anger, environmental contamination, genetic predisposition, metabolic abnormalities, and obesity is not properly addressed. ?He believes the continued use of rx’s is harmful to the immune system. He stresses that its therapeutic goal of relieving symptoms is doing more harm than good.

Murray uses medical statistics to validate most patients’ need for diet and lifestyle changes. He suggests dietary changes including more water consumption, no carbonated beverages or diuretics, limiting alcohol, reducing food portions, eating slowly, and chewing more. He recommends nutritional supplements.

Murray insists that medicine needs to view the whole person in perspective. He advocates no smoking, avoiding stress, proper rest, better time management, eating healthy, and learning to relax, laugh, and play. He promotes regular workouts and exercise to keep lean body weight and muscle mass while decreasing body fat.

After finishing the book, I went to the appendix and took the self-test first. It was “Are You an Optimist?” 48 questions later I read how to interpret my own optimism/pessimism, pervasiveness, hope, internalization/externalization. My overall score was moderately optimistic for whatever it is worth. Then I went over the ones for osteoporosis, being hunger free, dietary supplements – all with loads of authoritative information, statistics, and tables.

Last I studied the list of research used to document this book. I broke up research into three categories–recent works, from 2000 through 2005, and prior to the year 2000. Of the 260 entries listed, approximately 3 out of every ten were current, 4 out of every ten were 4 to 9 years old, and the remaining 3 out of every ten much older with some even going back into the mid-1950’s. I personally feel that referencing more timely books and papers would be the ultimately authoritative way to go.

This author’s book “What the Drug Companies Won’t Tell You and Your Doctor Doesn’t Know” addresses the cholesterol myth, the power of attitude in overcoming illness and trauma, how ideal body weight helps satiety, how sleep regulates hormones and deprivation yields fatigue and loss of intellectual functioning. Is it the right book for you? Can it help you? Only you can decide.

  1. Debbie,

Sometimes it depends on the illness or injury.  While a bandaid may be great for a minor cut, some need medical attention.

  2. I think that natural remedies and prescription med’s both have their place, but I always try the natural remedy first.

  3. Janet,

Yes if and when we can.  Too many rx’s without doctors even checking what the patient has from other physicians.
