I Got Two Dogs by John Lithgow Childrens Book Review And Giveaway
When I learned that New York Times bestselling author John Lithgow had published another children’s book, I willingly volunteered to review it. I already was familiar with the success of his last seven books, his two Parents’ Silver Honor Awards, and his four Grammy nominations.
“I Got Two Dogs” is a natural bedtime story for young children aged two to six and a sure fire selection for early readers. Briefly, this is the story of two dogs that are as different as they can be, both well-loved by their owner. Since most kids love pets especially dogs, the tale is sure to hold their interest.
The prose is charming, almost poetical. The pages are filled with rhythm, meter, and rhyme. Consonation makes the words charming. The end’s repeating lines serve as a refrain. This book is sure to become a beloved favorite.
“I Got Two Dogs” is a winner. This book is a great opportunity to introduce critical thinking to the emerging reader. It builds reading interest and skill. Its illustrations are colorful and sure to catch little ones’ eyes. The best thing about every drawing is that it can be used to develop stories–for example, how dogs behave, play, and react to other animals.
Lithgow’s sings his story of the dogs Fanny and Sue on accompanying CD. I listened to it with the heart of a child and loved every moment. I could see myself turning the pages and following along. I could see a little boy or girl learning the words and singing it too.
The I Got Two Dogs: (Book and CD) is published by Simon & Schuster under ICBN-13 #978-1-4169-5881-9. The hardcover lists at $17.99. I liked the book and CD so much that I am sending a copy of it to my granddaughter NV.

Unfortunately, I don’t have kids of my own (yet, hopefully)… but I do have 2 nephews and a niece (under 8) who absolutely LOVE to read books and love to have sleep overs! I would definitely keep it in a safe place so that when they came over for a sleep over, we could read it before bed!
