I was hooked on amusement parks early on. I remember my aunt and uncle telling me how I was riding the merry-go-round in Palisades Park when the whistles blew out the end of WWII. My first memories are of me on the carousels that dotted the Jersey shore.

Now I have been to many amusement parks all over the United States. Coney Island, Disney, Universal, Seaworld, Knotts Berry Farm, Bush Gardens, and Six Flags are world famous. Still there are many smaller ones out there who hold an allure. Freestyle Amusement Park is most certainly one of them.

Recently, I found myself in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I was there with other bloggers visiting Freestyle Music, the newest theme park in the U. S. A. Its 55 acres were once the home of now bankrupt Hard Rock Music Park. In February 2009, investors purchased it for a $25 million song and reopened it in May rethemed and rebranded. Its four areas–rock, country, pop, and R&B–contain 50+ attractions as well as a live music amphitheater.

I entered the park at VIP Plaza where entertainment, dining, and shopping beckons. From there it was Across the Pond to London and Faerie Glen both bright and charming. Whirlygigs, the Round About, Monstars of Rock, McGillivray Cab Company, Carnaby Carousel, the Arcade, and Jump attracted and amused young and old.

Over in Country USA, the Iron Horse, Texas Swing, Big Ol’ Trucks, and Ice Cold Company were drawing lines. I took a shopping break. Time for some entertainment. As I watched Adrenaline Rush, I thought how kids would love the skateboarding antics. I dropped in at CSI Live and delighted at its magical premise. Too bad we missed Flip 5 Live.

Back in Kids in America, attractions like Ring My Bell, Grunge Station, Fantasy Harbour State Park, Kid’s Tree House, Hang Ten, Soak’d, Life Is a Highway, Fly Like an Eagle, Get Off My Cloud, Wheels in the Sky, Cuchoo-Ka-Choo-Choo, and Doo Wop Dune Buggies kept riders soaring, swooping, and spinning. I checked out some more stores.

I took a seat at Myrtle’s Beach home of Poly Nesian’s Splash Bash and the Time Machine. I watched hubby take on the Time Machine, the amusement park’s signature roller coaster. 32 people in eight rows for four across sit through a thrill ride that pushes the limits along its 3,738 foot track. With a lift height of 155 feet and six inversions (a 120 foot loop, a 95 foot cobra roll, and a 75 foot zero G roll), it reaches 65 MPH–mighty fast. Hubby was in the front. I know he enjoyed himself because he had a big smile on his face upon exiting.

The evening was quickly winding down. 7.5 minutes of fireworks would soon Kiss the Sky. Hubby and I found seats nearby for the show stopping extravaganza. 1,000 pieces of pyrotechnics were positioned on barges and pylons around the illuminated 70 foot Gibson guitar at the center of the 9 acre lagoon. Specially programmed neons and strobes, lasers, flame bursts, lights, and 203 fountains reaching 80 feet set in sync to music dazzled the audience. Wow!

Freestyle Music is a family destination and a music lover must. Management is targeting the local market for now with plans this year for a summer season with expansion into the spring and fall. Plans for signature Freestyle character appearances are now in the works. Special admissions deals and bargain promos are bringing in the tourists. Next time through the Carolinas I wanna return.
