Casio Exilim EX-S12 Digital Camera Review

casio exilim exs12 digital camera

I anxiously awaited the delivery of the new Casio Exilim EX-S12 Digital Camera to my door. It was the must pack item for my recent trip to Orlando. I barely got a chance to charge its batteries when we were southbound. Already familiar with the EX-Z29 (see my August 3, 2009 review), I knew I would love getting a chance to review it.

I managed to take many shots with it before the jaws of danger and destruction, actually a set of elevator doors in a timeshare hotel, clamped on it and me. The camera is well-made, durable, and sturdy but its being dropped forcefully, even though accidentally, did cause some cosmetic damage. I must stress though that its picture taking capacity remained AND I did not lose any of my pictures because of the mishap. I did lose my head when speaking to the concierge though. Those doors definitely were neither Handicapped Friendly or even Non-Handicapped Hospitable.

Just like the last Exilim I used, the Exilim EX-S12 is delightfully compact, light-weight, and fits into my pocket. I don’t have to set and reset dials. I love the built-in flash, zoom in/out feature, automatic face detection, and best shot mode. I don’t need my reading glasses to see images through its 2.7 inch super clear LCD monitor. I can get close up pictures from far away with its 3X optical and 12X total zooms so with 12.1 megapixel resolution, my prints are great.

I haven’t gotten the chance to put it through the paces as it has been returned for replacement (those elevator doors hurt both it and me). I am awaiting its exchange but know that next time round, I intend to experiment with more special features including:

* Dynamic Photo — allows user to add animated graphics
* High Speed Burst — takes up to sixty frames in one second
* High Speed Video — moments unseen by the human eye taken in slow motion
* HD Movie — up to 720p
* Movie Button — switches from stills to videos automatically; no need to change settings
* Night Scene — takes blur free images without need for a tripod
* Best Shot Auto Face Detection — adjusts exposure and setting automatically; optimum focus even with backlight
* YouTube Capture Mode — makes uploads easy
* Auto Shutter Detect smile — has automatic facial-recognition software to catch smiley faces
* Make-Up Mode — photographer can adjust skin beauty 12 ways in problem situations like direct light
* Auto Shutter Panning — automatically captures everything without blur

With everyone gathering for the holidays, I take lots of photos. A Casio digital camera like this is already on next year’s wish list. The Casio Exilim EX-S12 Digital Camera can be purchased online, in local stores throughout the US and in the chain stores like Walmart, Target, 6th Avenue, BestBuys, Staples, and Radio Shack. Casio’s Exilim EX-S12 is available in silver, pink, green and black. At $249 estimated retail, it is a steal of a deal.

All the pictures for my recent Florida blog posts, specifically Capone’s Dinner and Show, Sleuths Mystery Theater, Universal Studios, Sea World, Walt Disney World, WWW Happy Birthday, were taken using it. I finally captured Cinderella’s Castle at night without obstructions. Boy was the Tomorrowland Transit Authority ride moving! It and other pictures will be featured in upcoming blogs and posts. Here are some of the other fun shots I got.

  1. Wow…12x Zoom has gotta be great! We need to replace our cam we have had for about 4 years now. I am really impressed with the shots on the racetrack…I assume they were moving at least at normal vehicle speed if not in racing mode. I love your Epcot shot of the dome…VERY good mirror image shot!
I used to do a lot of photography with mostly my kids as my “subjects” and thought I would never really like the digitals. BUT…lot of money saved on crummy shots, when you dont have a clue what your shots are gonna show til after you pay the price. Literally. I would love to have one of these. Like you said…NEXT year’s wish list! I dont get out shopping much and didn’t even know Casio was in the running for a good digital camera. AND probably better pricing because they don’t advertise as much as the bigger camera companies out there.
Ouch…never tango with an elevator…they’ll take you “down” every time!!! Ha!
(sorry, couldn’t resist). Hope you are OK and your new cam is all patched up soon and ready for some more great shots!
Enjoy the warmth…I am so jealous!!! It is 18 degrees here today and probably close to 10 now. BBbbbrrrr!
