In the last year this blog has featured many posts on VeggieTales. (See 2/13/2011, 3/7/2011, 3/27/2011, 8/18/2011, 9/1/2011 posts.) I like VeggieTales for age-appropriate animation, language, and positive themes. I personally prefer the stories which involve morals without heavy biblical references. I relate more to Pistachio: The Little Boy That Woodn’t than Dave and the Giant Pickle. Defined religious references may exclude potential non-christian audiences.

Little ones have so much imagination, so they have no difficulty accepting animated anthropomorphic vegetables like Bob the Tomato, Larry the Cucumber, and Asparagus Junior. The life lessons they demonstrate like self-esteem, kindness, and listening are important. Like the Mary Poppins song says, “A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down.” Face it, folks, no one adult or child, wants to be preached at, but every adult and child needs to be able to explore the natural human feelings that define us.

VeggieTales Little Ones Can Do Big Things Too! includes Dave and the Giant Pickle, Lyle the Kindly Viking. and Pistachio: The Little Boy That Woodn’t, silly songs I Love My Lips, Larry’s High Silk Hat, and Where Have All the Staplers Gone?, bonus features Veggie Kids Behind the Scenes, Larry Visits a Puppet Theater, How to Draw Goliath, Singalong Songs Big Things Too! and Where Have All the Staplers Gone?, plus new Veggie Kids footage on things big and small.

Using identifiable classics like Collodi/Disney makes comprehension easier. The writers’ play on words brings humor into the telling. Keep wholesome family entertainment like this coming. (I said family because kids need more than only peer influences.)

Big Idea released VeggieTales: Little Ones Can Do Big Things Too! to DVD September 18, 2012. With a SMRP of $15.88, tag its 120 minutes as a meaningful child-friendly entertainment experience.

    My favorite veggie is all of them that I can put on a salad. I’m on a health kick right now. Trying to get healthier for my children and myself. If I had to pick one it would be broccoli :) it’s good steamed, cooked, raw, with dip, & in my shakes that they use on biggest loser. So yummy! I’ve even noticed spinach taste good too!
