Critics should review movies not by arbitrary literary standards but by what works for the viewing audience. If you read my August 19, 2012 review, you already know I thought The Odd Life of Timothy Green is solid family fair. I call it heartwarming sci-fi fantasy fiction. Is this strangle tale that unites a childless couple with an unexpected dream child who is everything they wished for less probably than stories of time travel, utopian shangrila, or war between worlds?
Told in a series of flashbacks, The Odd Life of Timothy Green works because ten year old CJ Adams makes the character Timothy convincingly naive, truthful, self-sufficient, and quirky. I wish that the script had developed an intriguing backstory of how the boy whose legs grew leaves came to be.
Heavy on drama, family, emotional bonds, sensitivity issues, Timothy’s appearance touches people. Timothy opens their eyes and perceptions. Small-minded people, bullies, meddlers, and controllers become better men and women. He teaches them then he is gone.
We know that Jim and Cindy Green are ready to raise a child; however, perhaps the adoption agency they petition will not agree. Curious about the ending, you will have to see the touching climax, a real heart string jerker, yourself.
Here’s a clip called Aunt Mel and Uncle Bub.
Rated PG, The Odd Life of Timothy Green is available December 4, 2012 online and in nationwide retailers.
