Annie’s cookbooks bought generations ago came to me from mother to daughter. They reflect another world with less excess. Meal planning centered on local, seasonal fresh food–long before today’s reality of imported goods, abundant canning, and frozen food. However, times have changed.

I have been searching for a more up-to-date good recipe reference. I even put one on my Christmas wish list last year. Funny man hubby gave me a Dummies version–just not my style. So when Reader’s Digest shipped me its Taste of Home, Best Loved Recipes I knew I had found gold. Its 1,485 favorite recipes including top 100 ones, lists of ingredients with detailed instructions, colored pictures, excellent prep tips, and a great index make for easy to follow tooth-some delights.

Contents by chapter arranged alphabetically include: appetizers, beef, beverages, breads, breakfast & brunch, cakes, candies, celebrations & holidays, condiments & sauces, cookies & bars, cooking for one or two, desserts, grand-prize winners, mealtime express, mom made it best, our contributor’s meals, pastas, grains & rice, pies & tarts, pork & lamb, potluck picks, poultry, salads, sandwiches & pizzas, seafood, sides, and soups.

Individual tastes, nutrition, health requirements as well as the larder allow for personal preferences. Here are a few of mine.

I pride myself on my deviled eggs, but Best Deviled Eggs added herbs make this hors d’oeuvre more zesty and flavorsome.

Just beef, no fish, soup, or cheese that is what hubby wants. The Mushroom Beef Stew is a time-saving tasty meal with leftovers if any frozen indefinitely.

Buttermilk Chocolate Bread, Walnut Banana Bread, Cranberry Nut Bread, Sweet Potato Bread, Zucchini Bread (no kidding)…yummy. Rich enough to be considered as desserts, I’d match them to any baker’s.

I like to spend time with my family. On our vacations together, Brunch Strada is a hearty casserole works well whether guests sit together or eat in shifts.

I don’t make many cakes because I flunked icing. Caveat: I regularly made Pineapple Upside Down Cake from scratch until I lost my mother’s recipe. The spiced one is just as good since as Thomas Wolfe once wrote, “You can’t go home again.”

I really could have used this cookbook when I was a working on-the go mom. Maybe then my daughter wouldn’t tell everyone what a bad cook I was. I only made meals with one entree served family style, one carb and veggie sides, and no desserts until plates were finished. Old-fashioned perhaps, that’s for you to decide. Still if I served less store bought, less takeout, less fast food and made more home cooked meals maybe I wouldn’t have to hear her complain a full generation later.
