On April 15, 2011, I reviewed Francesca Simon’s Horrid Henry Rocks, a fun book that reminds readers that little boys are made of snips and snails and puppy dog tails. It’s time for another fun book review, Lauren Barnholdt’s Hailey Twitch and the Campground Itch. This one proves sugar and spice and everything nice may be what most little girls are made of but Hailey Twitch NOT.
Imaginative second grader Hailey and her invisible magic sprite Maybelle Sinclair are going to Lake Missoni with her dad and mom, friend Addie Jokobed, fourteen year old sister Kaitlyn, and Kaitlyn’s friend Maya Greenbert. The weekend is memorable as suitcases, green hair, poison ivy, an arcade game gone array, playing sharks and
Russian spies, a new boy Hayden, and a tree house disaster complicate plans.
The two weeks time Maybelle has to practice magic is nearly over and her magic will disappear if she doesn’t do good not bad with it. Hailey must save her imaginary friend. Can she? Then what? Ah, that will be another juvenile fiction chapter book story.
Illustrator Suzanne Beaky’s expressive, quirky illustrations put early readers kindergarten through early elementary grades right into the adventure. Hailey Twitch and the Campground Itch lists for $6.99.

Our new reader in the house Miss Gabby, she is like a bull dog with books, since she has learned to read. She and I will be reading it together, and I know once she has gotten all the words down, she will be reading to her baby brother.
