On January 5, 2010, Walt Disney Home Entertainment will release Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You Special Edition on DVD. Its US list price is $29.99.

This DVD contains previously released Valentine’s Day television special as well as two previously released The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh segments, Un-Valentine’s Day and The Three Little Piglets. What makes it a special edition is its never released before My Hero short, bug-catching game, and set of Valentine cards.

Visuals are great in Winnie the Pooh: A Valentine for You which has the creatures in the Hundred Acre Woods reacting to Christopher Robin’s first crush as is voice-acting. At times though the songs detract from the flow of the story, but the designs well fit the characters. Backgrounds are effective and evoke emotions proper to the scenes. Strong characters like Amicable Pooh, timid Piglet, wise Owl, and bouncy Tigger are reflections on human nature as it is. Plot details like the ambiguity of Smitten’s identity and adding the best lines from A. A. Milne’s books hint a valuable lesson: there is room in our hearts for both old and new friends.

The animation in Un-Valentines Day is drawn with less detail, making characterization more general with less subtleties apparent. It is slap-stick with profound moments. However, the abrupt mid-episode plot change from the present exchange to a movie-making parody weakens the episode.

The Three Little Piglets retells the story of the three little pigs. Its humor fit its audience. I enjoyed it immensely and found myself wishing it were longer.

The bonus My Hero (not already out on any DVD) has Piglet save Tigger’s life. If you are an avid Pooh fan, this is a must purchase and the only way to get the feature. When Tigger vows to be his personal servant, things get complicated. Too bad the tale ended so quickly.
