Audiences 18-34 enjoy The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and the proof is the 3+ million viewers who regularly watch it Monday evenings on ABC Family.
Previous Volume 1-3 DVD releases played out teens going through pregnancy and a young mother’s frustrations. Volume 4′s plots move to cougar dating, therapy, baby birth, parental mistakes, sexuality, reality vs hopes, custody, money and more. Personal relationships broken, rekindled, reconciled are explored along with motivations, insecurities, and forgiveness or not.
As a parent and grandparent, I wish The Just Say Me Campaign where girls swear off sex remained in the forefront longer. It had the ability to influence teens and spread a strong positive message. Too bad the show decided to script life as dull without boys being around and ended the fad as quickly as it began. It’s not all sex. The writers of The Secret Life should expand story lines and reflect more of life. A move in that direction is needed. Adding new characters to expand a circle and life experiences beyond sex can open so many possibilities.
Here’s a clip called “Gossip”.
