Sharpe Hills Vineyard is housed in an old historic building that dates back to 1844. It boasts two fireplaces and is a showplace for 18th century antiques. Although its Fireside Tavern’s gourmet dining was closed when I arrived, its tasting room (open year round Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 A. M. to 5:00 P. M.) was open.
Knowing that Yankee Magazine’s Best of New England’s May/June Issue included Sharpe Hills Vineyard on its best wine tasting venue, I was excited to be invited for a private wine tasting. Hubby, designated driver, had to forgo luckily for me…. I sampled a variety of delicious wines before I chose Ballet of Angels as my favorite. I just could not resist this reasonably priced, fruity white wine so beautifully bottled.
Other selections available include Sharpe Hill Vineyard American Chardonnay, Sharpe Hill Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay, St. Croix, Cabernet Franc, Select Late Harvest, Sharpe Hill Dry Riesling, Red Seraph, Cuvee Ammi Phillips, Dry Summer Rose, and Pontefract. To date these wines have been awarded 250+ medals in national and international wine competitions.
Although neither winery tours or picnicking are available, guests are welcome to take a self-guided walk of the vineyard. Known for its quaint setting and rural atmosphere, Sharpe Hills began in 1992 with the planting of its first grapevines. Its slopes rising 700 feet above Connecticut’s Quiet Corner, offer a spectacular view of the surrounding area. From Last Green Valley, visitors even can see Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Sharpe Hills Vineyard is located at 108 Wade Road, Pomfret, Connecticut 06258. For more information visit www.sharpehill.com or call 860-974-3549.

I prefer white wines over red. I didn’t even realize there was a winery in Mystic.
