Golden Lamb Buttery, Brooklyn, Connecticut

When I first heard that I was going to visit the Golden Lamb Buttery restaurant, I thought its name was curious. Upon entry to the restaurant in a beautiful old red barn, its owner explained. The buttery established in 1963 got its name from her grandmother. The woman loved the charm eating places (called butteries) in Ireland. As she showed me around the Golden Lamb, she told how the Booths, her grandparents, established it in 1963 and how she continues their tradition as did her parents before her.

The Golden Lamb is set amidst charming, peaceful surroundings on rustic HillandDale Farm. The greeting room/reception area decorated with antiques and memorabilia of the past welcomed me. As I walked out to the deck, I delighted. A country road, summer greenery, and a beautiful lake served as background for the sheep and miniature donkey grazing. Casual elegance best best describes the 150 year old farm house surrounded by 1,000 acres of rolling hills.

Our waitress walked me through the tiny kitchen that serves three dining rooms before seating me. She was personable, gracious, and knew and did her job well. She described the day’s lunch menu was on a slate before quickly bringing water, warmed biscuits, salad. Even with a limited daily menu, I was at loss as to which meal to choose. All of them were homemade, organic, and with fresh herb and spice secret ingredients. Finally I chose French Peasant Soup, a beef consomme filled with garden root vegetables. That was followed by Hillandale Hash, chopped tenderloin steak, mushrooms, celery and onions sauteed to perfection.

Full already, I asked for a takeout box for my leftovers. I had to save some room for the homemade dessert, pecan cheesecake.

Every course was superlative. The place’s atmosphere and ambiance made my eating experience a true feast–fresh, well presented, totally delicious. As Napoleon once promised, “I shall return.”

The Golden Lamb Buttery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 2:30 P. M. for lunch. It is open for dinner Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 P. M. It is located off Rt. 169, at 499 Wold Den Road, Brooklyn, Connecticut 06234. Call 860-774-4423 for reservations as seating is limited. Go online to thegoldenlamb@charter.net for more information.

Oh my goodness, how yummy it all looks. I believe I’d start with the Pecan Cheesecake dessert first. I never have enough room for dessert. M-M-M
