Gary Unmarried, Season One, CBS’s award-winning Monday, 9:30 P. M., sitcom has been released to DVD. Its three discs of 20 episodes plus bonus The Chemistry of Comedy, Planet Begley, Tuesday on the Set with Jay, and Gary Unhinged list at $39.99. This is a must see for anyone who enjoys light comedy, real life, and talented actors/actresses.

Jay Mohr of SNL fame has good timing. His portrayal of charming but unscrupulous and sarcastic Gary Brooks is both believable and funny. No wonder this show received the People’s Choice Favorite New Comedy Award.

Gary after fifteen years of wedded life is now a bachelor. His balancing work, child custody, an ex-wife, and a new life and loves complicate his once uncomplicated life. It is complex for this likable everyday underdog to move on, adjust to a new life, handle a relationship with ex, Allison Brooks (Paula Marshall), and build other relationships and romance.

Many viewers will pick up on the irony of Gary negotiating his divorce from Allison. This is one split couple, who should never have split, undermine each other, try for reactions, and compete. Hostility builds on acid dialogue and point scoring, making for great comic cracks. Too bad that Dr. Krandall (Ed Begley, Jr.) isn’t around for more marriage counselor advice.

Although supporting actors come and go, teen children, brash Tom (Ryan Malgarini) and precocious Louise (Kathryn Newton), are talented comic foils. Everyone can identify with Gary, the poor soul, faced with a full house, holiday competition, even finding his ex an new beau. Imagine scenes where Gary and Allison pretend to still be married, move in together temporarily, or hooking up with one another. These things really can happen.

Gary Unmarried centers on situations like new relationships and threatened relationships, one-up-manship, new boundaries, alimony, personal gifts, impressions, new friends, dating woes, family weddings, IRS audit advice, vetoes, bowling, and more.
