The public should be aware that 2,000,000 people annually develop possibly fatal blood clots in their lower leg systems. Annually some 300,000 Americans die from Deep Vein Thrombosis. Scary, huh?
I’ve been in and out of various doctor’s offices for the last six weeks because of pain in my leg while standing. The family physician, bariatric surgeon, and the foot specialist all agreed that proper hosiery was the first order of business. Compression hosiery can help in cases where older people, the obese, the pregnant, those unable to walk as well as those sitting for extended periods of time are hurting.
Years ago I was prescribed compression hosiery after knee surgery. Being an old pack rat, I pulled them out. They didn’t fit–too big. I ordered new ones–too light. Don’t waste any money on sale items. Get what your doctor recommends. It will save you in the long run. Compression stockings, knee-high, calf, and pantyhose can help blood flow properly especially in the lower foot-ankle area.

I just received a pair of Ames Walker #830 for review.

March was DVT Awareness Month. March may be over but the need for awareness of this condition remains. Here is some information from Ames Walker on Deep Vein Thrombosis.
A Silent Killer: Deep Vein Thrombosis
Asheboro, North Carolina (March 11, 2010) – Are you at risk? DVT, Deep Vein Thrombosis, is a potentially fatal blood clot that forms in the deep vein system of the lower leg and can occur from sitting in the same position for an extended period of time. According to the American Heart Association, more than 2 million Americans develop DVT each year, which can cause pulmonary embolism (PE) and may even lead to death.
“A silent killer is among us,” said John Mauriello, MD, FACPh, American College of Phlebology President-elect. “It is a disease that the population in general needs to take more seriously. For many, this illness can strike without warning because the symptoms are difficult to detect or thought of as minor leg pain and ignored.”
To reduce the risk of DVT, physicians recommend wearing graduated compression products which aid blood flow to legs. Graduated compression applied to the lower extremities accelerates the velocity at which the blood flows through the deep veins placing the greatest compression at the ankles where it’s needed most, helping improve circulation.
According to PreventDVT.org, approximately 300,000 Americans die each year from DVT-related PE, which is more than AIDS and breast cancer combined. While most victims are older, obese or pregnant, DVT can strike anyone under the right circumstances. Anyone whose job or personal interests require a great deal of long distance travel in cramped seats should take precautions as these conditions place extra strain on the veins.
AmesWalker Microfiber Firm Support Travel Socks, offer the protection needed when traveling by improving circulation in legs. In fact, The World Health Organization recognizes this type of sock to reduce the risk of DVT when flying. As the leading online provider of compression hosiery, AmesWalker.com also offers dress, casual and graduated compression athletic socks as well as sheer, opaque and maternity compression hosiery. Products are only available online at www.AmesWalker.com
Additionally, AmesWalker.com has recently launched A Lighter Vein, a blog which offers news, expert insight and information about leg health and the benefits of compression socks. Want to know more about DVT? Readers are encouraged to use the “Ask a Doctor” feature, to find answers to any leg/vein healthy concern.

Years ago a doctor prescribed compression stockings for me. Not covered by insurance I could not afford them. I am told they really do work. Who knows if maybe someday I will have to wear them, as even though I’ve lost a lot of weight my veins are the same. Thanks for your thoughts on these.

Am anxious to order my first pair. Now in my early 80s have needed for 60 years just what I believe you have ! Recommended to me today by my doctor niece who has worn them herself forever. Isn’t it good that I thought to ask her where she gets her knee highs, her very own fashion statement!
