Lyrical sounds appeal to young readers so this book being written almost entirely in rhyming couplets will draw them in. The nameless main character is nameless; therefore most primary school aged children can readily identify themselves with him.

This is a tale of a youngster who is exploring the world. When he climbs a tree, he sees birds, clouds, houses…. Then he begins to wonder how he will get down. A bee, a bird, and a cat all give him advice, but he realizes that the advice won’t work for him. As he worries, his father climbs a after and rescues him.

The father telling him that he loved him and was glad he didn’t get hurt made the story for me. All kids do things. It is the job of parents to give the clear message they support their kids and will help them as they learn life’s lessons.

On a scale of 1 to 10, this one is a 9. The bright colors and simple pictures will appear to new readers. My only regret is that the text was wavy instead of completely horizontal. I think that would have made the early reading experience easier for a first or second-grader to follow along with or even do himself/herself.

Here’s a description of the book from the author’s site.

Climbing a tree sounded like a great idea, but it turns out that getting down is much harder than climbing up! Perched on a branch high up in a tree, a young boy must decide whether to find a way to the ground by himself or wait for his dad. All kinds of animals, from bees to birds to cats, offer him advice on how to get down (Jump! Fly! Climb!), but it’s up to him to figure out if their advice is worth taking.

Told in a lyrical rhyming style and charmingly illustrated by the author, I’m Up in a Tree is a book for kids and their parents to enjoy together.
