When I had my first child, I looked at her and realized the very day that she was born that it was my job to help her grow into her own person.  Marianne Richmond’s book “If I Could Keep You Little” is built on this premise.  Its sweet, inspiring words are a powerful insight into the cause and effect relationship between the parent and the child.  Time indeed is fleeting.  The balance of the special mother/son-daughter relationship in learning, extending boundaries, and growing up and away is important.

I enjoyed reading this softly sentimental children’s book aloud.  Perhaps I learned as much in doing so as my captive audience.  The poetic style of the soft sentimental story  fitted perfectly with its soft watercolor illustrations.  This book although aimed for both boys and girls ages 4 through 8, is a reminder that memory and expectations change with time.
