Amelia DVD Review

amelia cover

The movie biopic Amelia starring Hillary Swank as Amelia Earhart, Richard Gere as husband-publisher George Putnam, and Ewan McGregor as lover Gene Vidal has been released to DVD. Its running time is 111 minutes.

The legend of Amelia Earhart is bigger than life itself. Since her disappearance over the Pacific in 1937 during a solo flight around the world to this day, aviation pioneer has been an inspiration to women and the woman’s rights movement. This film does not measure up to the legend of the tomboy aviatrix who became the outspoken queen of the air. It does not develop her troubled childhood, family fortunes and not, or father’s alcoholism.

The facts are there from her beginnings in Atchinson, Kansas, to her disappearance somewhere over the Pacific’s Howland Islands. However, a hook, perhaps an allusion to Tokyo Rose or Irene Craigmile Bolam, would have better drawn the viewer in. Could Earhart have assumed another identity like, perhaps, Anastasia?

Including more theories about what happened to the celebrity might have turned a lackluster script into big box office. I know  about other crash and sink theories, the rumor she was FDR’s spy, published Saipan claims tweak my curiosity. What about you?

Here’s some more information on the movie.
