Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment just released Air Bud Golden Receiver Special Edition on DVD. I kept telling hubby “What a beautiful dog!” as I laughed and enjoyed the feature. Of course, it is unbelievable for a golden retriever to play football. Still in the movies, fantasy is reality.

Josh Framm reluctantly joins his high school’s football team. His dog buddy accompanies him to practice and shows he can handle the ball. Complete with uniform, the canine joins the Timberwolves and leads them to the state championship. On the day of the big game, Josh runs away and Buddy is dognapped. Josh returns home when he realizes that it is all right to love more than one person. Patrick comes to the rescue by saving. All ends happily.

The G-rated Special Edition comedy lists or $29.99 with a running time of 90 minutes. It even has an exclusive bonus feature, All-New Sports Channel Play-By-Play Quarterbacked By The Buddies.

It features Kevin Zegers as teenager Josh Framm, Cynthia Stevenson as his widowed mother Jackie, Gregory Harrison as the man in mom’s life veterinarian Patrick Sullivan, and Robert Costanzo as Coach Famelli. The basic plot reminded me of one of the Beethoven releases with dognappers and the dog saving other stolen animals. (I liked that one too.)
