From toddler to adult I saw Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs eight of the nine times it was released to movie theaters. I missed 1937 because it was several years before I was born. It is the best animated movie ever and is on the National Film Register for its cultural, historical, and aesthetical significance. I suppose everyone knows that it was the first animated sound motion picture ever. It even won a special Academy Award for screen innovation. It is being released on October 9, 2009, as a Diamond Edition combo pack of Blu-ray and DVD. It will be on sale for a limited time then go back into the vault for another seven years.

My VCR copy of the film is just about worn out so I couldn’t wait to play the Diamond Edition. It was fantastic. Modern technology has it all on one disk. The image is better than ever in high resolution. Opticals are state of the art as is audio. Modern technology took the original monaural soundtrack and remixed it using new rechanneling techniques. Seeing the video at home is almost as good as in the theater.

Curtains, trees, stones, and house walls have been added at the side of teach film frames so that the image fills the whole screen and is not just a box in the middle. Colors are vibrant. Boy, did those diamonds ever shine as the dwarfs mined them! The Wicked Queen in the mirror still scared me a little. Tiny details like the well pump’s and the candle holder’s faces stood out.

The dark scene with Snow White escaping from the castle into the swampy forest was a good contrast to the lighter times that follow. Her scolding herself for being afraid shows the audience that it is natural to feel fear. Watching her forest friends help and “Whistle While You Work” is a good lesson for today’s kids to see. Help and cooperation make things easier.

For those of you that don’t have a Blu-ray player yet, you won’t believe the difference in quality and features that there is with many movies. Blu-ray has up to 6x better quality than DVD. You don’t have to have a Blu-ray player to watch Blu-ray movies, they can also be viewed on a Playstation 3. Blu-ray discs are more scratch resistant than DVDs and often offer even more special features and games. If you don’t have a Blu-ray player or PS3 yet, don’t worry. The Disney Combo pack offers both Blu-ray and DVD discs in the same package. So you won’t have to wait seven more weeks until the DVD comes out. And you won’t have to hunt down your favorite movies to buy when you do get a Blu-ray player.
