Nobel prize winner Rudyard Kipling, to keep it short, innovated the short story. The Disney movie The Jungle Book is based on his work. His children’s book Just So Stories remains a classics. Many school literature textbooks contain his tale of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. The story of his poem which ends, “You are a better man than I am, Gunga Din!”? The fact is that Kipling‘s work is controversial because of how he portrayed the prejudice and militarism of British imperialism.

I knew as soon as I saw the book cover that this was the artwork of Jerry Pinkney. His style is so very distinctive!
