My husband lives “For God and Country”. Over fifty years service to veterans’ programs proves it. A flag pole stands in front of our house because we are proud to be Americans.

I was a loss as to what to get him for Christmas until I received Flag, a stirring tribute to the American spirit. Its photos are unique and show how the American Star Spangled Banner is part of all America every day. Flags depicts eighty pictures spanning forty-five years of photography in sepia. It is Victor Friedman’s perspective of people, places, and moments. What ties the theme together is the ever present U. S. Flag. There is something in it for everyone. You have to see it yourself.

Flag is true art and Victor Friedman is a great artist. Don’t overlook him or his book.

Flag is available for purchase online from Penguin for $18.00.

About Flag

Renowned photographer Victor Friedman never really set out to do an entire book about the American flag. Yet when he began to examine all of his proof sheets from a professional career spanning forty-five years, he discovered that the American flag was everywhere: showing up behind the scarred face of a Vietnam soldier; on a rural farm stand providing food for its community; alongside a subway trumpet player blowing his heart out for nickels and dimes; flying high above a bustling city street. Although more often than not it hangs unnoticed in the background, Friedman realized its very ubiquity speaks volumes about everyday Americans and the tokens of American life that define them.

FLAG (Viking Studio, November 2, 2009, $18.00) is an eye-catching testament to the American people’s longstanding, rich, and diverse relationship with their flag. A veteran photographer, Friedman captures the essence of Americans in his nostalgic collection of portraits, landscapes, and classic Americana. Whether taken the countryside or cityscape, Friedman’s photos are universal and timeless, illuminating the diverse perspectives that shape America’s soul. His photographs illustrate the myriad ways—and places—that Americans have displayed the flag as a symbol of pride.

FLAG is a timely souvenir for a momentous year in American presidential history—a reminder of the America that once was as well as the incredibly diverse, inclusive America that now is. With more than eighty of Friedman’s unique works, FLAG celebrates a powerful emblem and beautifully captures its everyday essence. FLAG will delight and mesmerize every family member, patriot, and photography lover alike.
