I received a review copy of the new album Slice courtesy of the One2One Network. I have been listening to it for the last week or so. It is the fifth studio album for John Ondrasik and Five for Fighting. It became available October 13, 2009 in stores, on line, and in iTunes. A track listing follows
- “Slice”
- “Note to the Unknown Soldier”
- “Tuesday”
- “Chances”
- “This Dance”
- “Above the Timberline”
- “Transfer”
- “Hope”
- “Story of Your Life”
- “Love Can’t Change the Weather”
- “Augie Nieto”
- “Nowhere Bar” (iTunes exclusive)
Ondrasik writes and performs his own material. His verse reflects his personal views on life–clean, clear, and meaningful. His style is reminiscent of early Billy Joel, Barry Manilow, and Nat King Cole. Add piano and some strings, some orchestration and the result is Wow! The music is definitely alternative set back, laid back and good for a listen although today’s generation may think differently.
The album title was inspired by Don McLean’s American Pie. The songs are filled with stories of passing time. Ostracize is a strong supporter of the American military and its families. His Note to an Unknown Soldier brings everything back home. My own personal favorite is Story of Your Life. I’m caught in the refrain.
Ondrasik is a srong supporter of the military and various charities. In February 2007 John launched whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com, a charity driven website that raises money for various charities when users view video clips provided by visitors to the site. Current views are over 3 million with approximately $300,000 donated! John is a dedicated supporter of US Troops, performing for US Forces at Guantanamo Bay, Hawaii, Guam & Japan on USO tours. He’s created & produced “For the Troops”, a CD compilation of superstar recordings that is available for free to every active service person in US Armed Forces. John Ondrasik is on Facebook and Twitter.
Five for Fighting, a platinum-selling artist, has given loyal fans another winner. It is well worth the listen.

It’s got the sort of melancholy/hopeful sound I found so compelling in Superman. I really enjoyed this. Thanks for the chance to win this CD. (I work in a retail store, and this is exactly the kind of music I like to have in the CD changer. Not overtly offensive to customers but not sleep-inducing in me.)

I listened to Chances by Five For Fighting. Very nice. I found myself tryiing to keep the beat. LOL. The band has some good musicians. I like that you can hear each instrument along with the voice.
