The Bill Engvall Show returns for its third season on TBS on Saturday, July 18, at 9 P. M. (EDT). I got an advance showing of two of its episodes. The humor is certainly different and what some might term redneck funny even though its main character Bill Pearson (Bill Engvall) is a family counselor. Much of it comes from slapstick one-liners.
Bill’s relationship with the various members of his family–wife Susan (Nancy Travis), teen daughter Lauren (Jennifer Lawrence), clueless son Trent (Graham Patrick Martin), and genius son Bryan (Skyler Gisondo) is what makes this a family-friendly sitcom. Uncle Paul (Tim Meadows) playing like Fred to his Bill’s Ricky-like role.
The season opener “Give Me a Break” spins its plot from bad economy forcing tightening in spending and lost baby pictures. I laughed each time the wife Susan ribbed husband Bill by singing, “Oh, my darling Clementine….” Gag lines, sarcasm, and mispronunciation bring on the laughs.
The second one “You Decide” has Bill deciding he must take control of more situations when he realizes that his wife not him has made most of the decisions. He confronts his neighbor Mr. Faulkner about his lounging in the hot tub au natural to no success. He attempts to buy the perfect bedspread and almost succeeds. It’s the banter back and forth that makes for the comedy.
In its first season in 2007, THE BILL ENGVALL SHOW set records as ad-supported cable’s #1 original sitcom of all time among adults 25-54. Last season, it averaged 2.6 million viewers and ranked as ad-supported cable’s #1 show in its time period among adults 18-49.
This show is about parents today not in past generations. Bill is no I Remember Mama, Father Knows Best, or Bill Cosby Show lead. He is the face of what people now think is funny. Tune in and see if you agree.

I have seen the show before, and think it is hysterical — it is already set on my DVR to record the whole season so I wont miss any of it. I really love the relationship between him and his wife, and I think Trent is so funny, he has no idea how “uninformed” (can’t really call him stupid, that would be mean) he is.
